Commander of the Yugoslav Air Force and Anti Aircraft Defenses, General Spasoje Smiljanic

Don't Ask "How?"

Regardless of how this threatening assault by all those super powerful, super modern NATO "hawks", "owls", "tornados", and visible or invisible "stealths", "ghosts" and "fortresses" (as American otherwise lovingly call their planes which sow the bombs of death), the name of the General of the Yugoslav Air Force and Anti Aircraft Defenses, Spasoje Smiljanic will enter all military textbooks.  Units under his command were the first ones in this world which managed to down the famous, as it was said up to now, invisible, not prone to falling F-117.  The Commander of the Yugoslav Air Force and Anti Aircraft Defenses whose results spurred on veritable gazers of general national pride and, in his own words, considerably solidified morale in the Yugoslav Army itself, appeared on Monday afternoon before many foreign and domestic journalists.  Smiljanic spoke in detail about the effects of attacks perpetrated against FRY thus far, and about the famous F-117 he briefly said: "We would have liked it better had it come on a friendly mission.  For instance to out air show in Batajnica.  It's a pity, he would have continued to fly today.  This way, we had to bring it down.  Please don't ask me how we did it."

Before the press conference, journalists were informed that all members of the Yugoslav Air Force and Anti Aircraft Defenses received commendations, and that many of them will be promoted and distinguished for courage.  The most interesting detail in this press conference (before which there was even mention that journalists might get a look at the first captured NATO pilot) were in fact the figures mentioned by General Smiljanic.  According to him, since the beginning of the NATO aggression against FR Yugoslavia, 430 latest models of planes were deployed, of which 330 are fighter planes.  From March 24 to Monday morning (8:00 a.m. on March 29) NATO airplanes flew as many as 1300 thousand sorties, launching around 400 cruise missiles at different targets in our country.  As the greatest proof of "humanitarian" tendencies by the USA and its European partners, General Smiljanic noted that the emphasis of the attacks is being transferred from military to industrial and civilian targets.  1900 tons of "propellant explosives" have been dropped of FRY, the total destructive power of which is enormous.  The same calculation indicates that 230 grams of explosives have been reserved for every citizen of FRY.
Of course, General Smiljanic also spoke about the effects of the bombing thus far.  As he noted that the Yugoslav Air Force and Anti Aircraft Defenses met the attack in complete readiness, which is why despite the enormous number of attacking sorties executed thus far all systems are operative and functioning.  Part of the units under his command have thus far suffered seven dead and 17 seriously and lightly wounded soldiers.  The damage thus far is estimated at 300 million dollars and mainly refers to "stationed objects of Yugoslav Air Force and Anti Aircraft Defense infrastructures."  On the other hand, according to General Smiljanic, thus far the enemy lost seven planes, three helicopters and three pilotless units.  Over 30 cruise missiles and projectiles have been destroyed.  Judging by all accounts, that is not all, for enemy aircraft have been shot by other parts of the Army - for instance, antiaircraft defenses of the ground troupes.  "As far as I know, they also had very good results, but I am sure the Commander of the Army will have more to say on this," stated the Commander of the Yugoslav Air Force and Anti Aircraft Defenses.

The General whose name will certainly be found in the future in expert literature on the same page as information about the F-117 - with the comment "sorry, we didn't know it was invisible," or with the expression which is very popular with Belgrade's kids these days "fucked him over" - ended his first appearance before journalists with the words: "My people and myself personally know how powerful our enemy is and how much evil he can do.  We don't know whether their paths must cross our country.  Or whether something else is at issue."
