The National Accord is Gaining in Strength

by Velizar Brajovic

National Accord is the winning combination for a democratic and prosperous Montenegro, stated Zarko Rakcevic, president of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), after the party's main committee decided that SDP shall appear on the November elections in coalition with the nationalists and the liberals. Satisfaction with such an act is openly manifested in the National Party and the Liberal Union, even more so since SDP was one of the initiators in forming this great coalition. National Accord was joined by the non-parliamentary Social Democratic Party. The assembly of that party, as the public was informed by Dr. Cedomir Pejovic, adopted the decision to join National Accord since they decided to "submit its interests - to the highest interests of common good." Even the Democratic Union of Albanians in Montenegro shall most probably join National Accord, but a definite answer is to be expected in the next few days. "We are interested in joining a democratic coalition, but only on the level of certain electoral units in Montenegro," says Mehmed Bardli, president of that party. "There is no need for forming a coalition on the republic level," continues Bardli. "Since Montenegro is not one electoral unit, we are prepared to cooperate in all electoral units where we jointly estimate that conditions and needs exist."

With the announcement of Asim Djecevic, president of the Muslim Democratic Party, the public was informed of that party's support of National Accord: "We are doing that because we believe that the coalition shall, on the basis of its program, win a majority in the parliament and shall establish full democratic rights for all as well as for the Muslim nation," stated Djecevic. National Accord is still awaiting a statement from the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) in Montenegro in connection with the coalition. Harun Hadzic, president of SDA, states that different views were expressed in connection with the coalition on the last meeting of SDA's main committee. A decision reagarding it shall be made by the party's new leadership which will be elected at the assembly scheduled for the last day of August.
