The General's Welcome

by Milos Vasic

Around sixty officers and policemen from Belgium, Russia and France were unexpectedly provided with a precise insight into what is lying ahead of them, and the domestic and international public were given precious information about what the real political climate inside the YPA (Yugoslav People's Army) is like.

The general felt the urge to warn the UNPROFOR officers "not to disgrace their countries". After a word of welcome and a couple of drinks, the good-natured lieutenant-general agreed to answer a few questions. The unplanned press-conference turned out to be very "productive". Following are the most interesting excerpts from the lieutenant-general's expose.

"... All Serbian territories and the Serbian people as a whole must be in one state... One single state. Just like the Russian people. If you can't ensure this by diplomatic means, we'll do so by war. And there will be blood everywhere....".

These statements differ acutely from "the main political line" of top military circles, although not from the way YPA has been behaving during the past months. However, the information that there will be "blood everywhere" and that all Serbs will be united in one state by means of war are new. Luckily, lieutenant-general Biorcevic said it in front of the UNPROFOR advance party; they now have extra information.
