Interview: Momcilo Trajkovic

Ruling By Means of the Chaos

by Branka Kaljevic

After the agile arrival of the citizens of Kosovo, supporters of the SPS, to the counter-meeting in Belgrade, the protest in Pristina was actually the first serious hint that the regime will misuse Kosovo again.

Momcilo Trajkovic, the leader of the Serbian Resistance Movement of Kosovo and Metohia (the movement of the Serbs from Kosovo who have drawn the separation line between themselves and the meeting in Pristina by the brisk announcement which, among other things, states that the SPS has made the peaceful and freedom loving people of Belgrade and Serbia the suspects for crimes whose instigators are not known yet...), says that this is yet another in the series of the regime’s abuse of the unresolved situation in Kosovo: "Regardless to the confusion in the people’s heads, to the fear of Serbs from Kosovo, people will not accept the accusations of this kind any more."

Is the story true that the rector is in conflict with President Milosevic because he has refused to support the education agreement between Milosevic and Rugova?

I don’t know whether they are in conflict, but I know that Milosevic desired that everything remained as it was before, as well the University. The same government has created, in relative terms, the Serbian Kosovo we have today, and Papovic was the key man in the creation of the Serbian University in Pristina. Now the government has changed its mind and wants the university to be the key point of the agreement on education. Papovic is the obstacle, because by returning to the old university scheme he, in fact, loses the achieved position. Our movement also believes that the Serbian University should remain.

Where are the Albanians in all this?

We have nothing against the idea that they should have their own University. After all, this is not the issue of the government or the Serbs, but of the international conventions which allows anyone to establish its own university.

You should know how the Socialists operate, considering the role the people in Kosovo, and for that matter you yourself, had in bringing Milosevic to power. Can they make today, as they did before, even bigger turmoil in Kosovo and prevent the democratic processes all over Serbia?

It was not us from Kosovo and Metohia who brought Milosevic to power. It was done by all of Serbia, and our movement from those days only fortified his position. When he first arrived to Kosovo he was the president of the party's Central Committee. We did not elect him to this office. Somebody else could have taken it, but it did not happen.

I believe that they will not succeed in creating chaos in Kosovo. Neither the Albanians, nor the Serbs want war. We have the example of Bosnia where after that much killing the negotiations are still necessary. Why would we then kill? Regardless to the information blackout in Kosovo, it is clear to the people what the government is doing, especially to those who were at the counter-meeting in Belgrade. It is clear to them that they were cheated. They were expecting flowers in the streets of Belgrade and were even promised that in the case of the attack they would be protected by the police. However, they were brought to the boiling point, confronted with the citizens of Belgrade with the democratic movement and the police did not intervene. The people realized they were used just as they had been several times before.

Do the Serbs from Kosovo believe today also that they could keep the peace and a normal life under police protection?

The life with the police is no life. But I must say that the only sector that functions in Kosovo is the police. They are in no way the solution and they are also dissatisfied with the situation in the province. The police can not prevent terrorism because it is the product of politics.

The Serbs, the Albanians and the police officers are being killed in Kosovo, and the causes are political; at least that is what has been said since there is no official information. Terrorism will exist until this government that has no support by the people goes. The murder cases are not being solved simply because the government rules in Kosovo by means of chaos. Either that, or the police are simply incapable. After two policeman were killed in Podujevo, Sainovic and Sokolovic came and during the rally promised that the criminals would be captured and that they are on their trail. Still, there is no trace neither of the terrorists nor of the ministers. The visit served as a function of the elections.
