Opinion Poll

After rumours that the ex Yugoslav prime minister Ante Markovic would be nominated by a group of Croatian opposition parties to run for president of the Republic of Croatia, "Globus", the Zagreb weekly asked 244 Croatian citizens to comment on this. One hundred and twenty eight (52.5%) out of the 244 polled said that "Ante Markovic should be brought to trial".

When asked whether Ante Markovic is at all suitable as a candidate, 87.5% said "no", 5.4% said "yes", and the remainder had no opinion on the matter.

The last question inspired many interesting answers. When asked whether Ante Markovic should be allowed to live peacefully as an ordinary citizen, 46% said "no", 44.2% wouldn't accept the pogrom-like conception of democracy and said "yes", while the remaining 9.8% had no opinion on the matter.

Finally, it would be interesting to find out what Mr. De Michaellis, Mr. Markovic's good friend, thought of these questions and especially of the answers while reading the afore mentioned magazine in which the editor interviewed the Italian Minister.
