The Velibor Ostojic Case

by Nagorka Idrizovic

The high U.S. official has asked the accused war criminals in former Yugoslavia to either surrender or spend their lives in flight.

"For their own security voluntary surrender would be the best solution. Otherwise, they will be in flight to the end of their lives. The accused will see The Hague. They will be brought to justice in The Hague. There is no other way for the accused," Scheffer said. Without having a guilty conscience, the MP's in the B-H Parliament set on keeping their parliamentary seats to the last breath, agreed and entrusted human rights to a former proof-reader at the RTV Sarajevo who is remembered as a language expert who always knew how to "give the right name to everything." For example, in his public appearances he exclusively referred to Muslims as Turks and to Croats as Ustashi, for whom there is no room on the Serb territories. Even where Velibor Ostojic is concerned, it is difficult to believe the claim of a witness recorded by Roy Gutman, the Pulitzer Prize Winner, that this newly-appointed official responsible for human rights once played football with the chopped head of a Bosnian. But, this is exactly what is mentioned by the Society for Afflicted Peoples, the Section for B-H, which protested "because of the MP's conduct." Dokic, the representatives of the opposition parties in Republika Srpska abstained, and the appointment of Ostojic was unanimously supported exclusively by the MP's of SDS, SDA and HDZ.

In an attempt to defend what defies defence, Haris Silajdzic, the Co-Chairman of the Ministerial Council and the President of the Party for B-H, said that what happened is "automatic", an "oversight" and that everything ought to be done to remove this. Halid Ganjac, the Chairman of the Main Board of SDA, demanded protection in "the mechanism of achieving a consensus", since, according to him, Velibor Ostojic "belongs to the core of those who committed crimes." Genjac added that his appointment was a big mistake of the SDA's parliamentary group, and that "the appointment ought to have been prevented regardless of the consequences." This important person in SDA proposes that the appointment be annulled, but the question is what would the consequences be if that were the case.

SGV, as well, has proposed that the decision be revised. Ostojic's appointment has shocked the peaceniks, humanitarian and cultural workers, educators and peasants. It is nice to know that people know who committed evil and that they knew what they wanted when the graffi
