Who is Rade Markovic, New Head Of The Secret Service

by Dragoslav Grujic

Radomir Markovic was born in 1946. His career as police officer began in 1970, when he started working on cases involving armed robberies. He became the commander of the Belgrade airport security unit after the “anti-bureaucratic revolution”, only to return to the regular task force as the chief of police. A Belgrade news agency said in 1992 that Markovic was heavily involved in money extortion. The Serbian police denied the allegations and said it had “no evidence that Mr. Markovic is involved in extortion or any other crime”. However, he was sacked from the post soon afterwards. Markovic slapped Danica Draskovic in the face in June 1993, when she and her husband Vuk Draskovic were arrested during an anti-regime rally in downtown Belgrade. Mrs. Draskovic had asked Radomir Markovic to protect her from police torture. In August 1993, Markovic became the assistant interior minister.

After the murder of Radovan Stojicic in 1997, Markovic became the head of the public security department. Several of his statements drew wide public attention. After Stojicic’s assassination, he said the police had plenty of  time to conduct a thorough investigation. After the Vreme published reports on police withdrawal following clashes with the KLA last December, Markovic dismissed the report as “untrue” and said that the police controlled “every inch of Kosovo’s territory.
His most notably hobby is flying, as he is a sports pilot.
