Neighbours Surprised

by Uros Komlenovic

However, those curious were in for an unpleasant surprise. The walls were spattered with blood, while the dead body of their neighbour. Radovan Nikolic, the financial director of the "Jugodrvo" company, lay on the floor.

As a 9 milimiter caliber gun was found in his hand, the first, of course, the unofficial version leaked out - suicide. The police is silent, as usual, for "the sake of investigation".

It has been learned in the meantime that Nikolic had taken his son to shcol that morning, only to return home to fetch a bag, right before the tragedy took place. There is still no information whether the bag has been found or not. The alleged telephone threats which Nikolic had received could seriously question the version of suicide, especially since it isn't logical that a person who wanted to bring his life to an end, would do it in the hallway of his house. If he had wanted to spare his family, he could have done it elsewhere, since the hallway is definetely not the most appropriate spot for a possibly desired sight.

The story about suicide could hold water if "Jugodrvo" had not been in focus of the public attention. Four days before the director of the company's branch in Budapest was killed in a car accident near Novi Sad.

It is also interesting that the State Security Department of Serbia became interested in oil deals of the "Jugodrvo" company three months ago. As a matter of fact, they accounted for their entry into the office where oil deals were made with alleged report that a bomb had been planted in the room. It is clear now that they were interested in something else. And, naturally, the testimonies of the financial director are invalueable when it comes to financial transactions. Unfortunately, he is dead, so that some details of the connections between the two arrested ministers and the "Jugodrvo" company will most likely never reach the light of day. In any case, what is unusual is the partaking of the State Security Department in tasks which are by definition reserved for their fellow colleagues from the Public Security. Their involvement could be taken as decisiveness of the Serbian political leadership to settle accounts with the "hoodlums in their own ranks". But, with due respect to their attempt, it does not unravel the web significantly.

It is widely known that Radoman Bozovic had his say in everything, and that his word was the last. Therefore, it is hard to believe that he had no clue what his two favourite ministers were doing. Then,. if Bozovic did know what his ministers were up to, why didn't he react? The investigation, if it is extended, could give an answer to this question. And the public is expecting additional explanation.

In any case, the proportions of this affair far surpass the importance of Vlajkovic and Mihajlovic, currently held in custody. The fact that the misfortunate directors of "Jugodrvo" had forever fallen silent ( regardless of a murder or suicide, a real or set-up accident ) speaks for itself. Will, besides Vlajkovic and Mihajlovic, someone else be sacrificed ( perhaps even Bozovic if Somebody decides that it has become "too hot" )?
