Zoran Andjelkovic Baki

by Aleksandar Ciric

CAREER AND NICKNAME: He was born in Varvarin, in 1958. At the proper time, he became the president of Local Youth Organization, the Secretary of the Regional Yourth Organisation, work action 'Autoput 1984' ('Motorway 1984') Commander, and then Secretary of the Socialist Federation of Youth in Serbia. He began his public career, in direct contact with people, as a salesman in the department store 'Robna Kuca Beograd' in Varvarin.  Later, he was appointed the executive secretary of the Central Committee of the Serbian Communist Federation, soon afterwards he became the head of the representative club of the Serbian Socialist Party, then, at the same place, (Vucelic's) deputy, and so on. He was nicknamed, as he himself says, in the beginning of his public (political) career, because he apparently could not memorise names of his associates, instead he always addressed them - directly and commonly with 'Baki!'.

TESTED ENEMIES: Even then, "Slovenia, Croatia, and the good-for-nothing leaderships of Serbia, Vojvodina and Kosovo and Metohija rose up openly against the Serbian people, their leadership and their attempts to create sovereignty and unity." Concerning this, Baki used to warn us: "Nobody has the right to take Serbs, who are confined on the other side of the new boundaries, away from Yugoslavia. If so, then it is not those boundaries that obligate us, but the three millions of Serbs who are being out of Serbia, and their destiny." Baki was right, today - less than a decade since the quoted prophecy - the number of Serbs out of Serbia is scarcely enough for an oath.

FROM 1389 UNTIL TODAY: In 1990, Kosovo and Metohije were regarded as "the century old problem of Serbian nationality, but only during the last three years has Serbia managed to take over command from the Albanian separatists."

KOSOVO, THE PRIMORDIAL ELEMENT:  As a member of the Central Committee, he was responsible for Istok township, near Pec: "I have actually been to Kosovo many times, and many people now think that I was born there. Some opposition representatives even accuse me of fleeing from Kosovo, not knowing that I was neither born, nor ever lived there, unless that is being understood like several years of honourable struggle of the Serbian people for having equal rights in their own country. The Serbs in these areas have accepted me as their compatriot, and  together with them, I took part in that struggle, although I was only a Party Official."

KOSOVO, THE WORK: Since he was under indictment for robbing the retirement home in Brezovica, and for being the owner of the radio station RADIO S, as well as for other business undertakings, he admitted that he was doing it as a leader of the GENES S, the company which is entirely owned and run by the Serbian Socialist Party, which we make not secret of."

KOSOVO, THE INSEMINATION: "The Separatist movement still exists, for instance in what Rugova does, but in the state context, it can never be inseminated again, so that the Serbs, the Montenegrins, as well as the Muslims and all others who recognise this country as their own, happen to be disposed around the key points, in order to secure the righteousness of the State."

REVOLUTIONARY PRACTICE: As for the political, family and blood relationships with the Yugoslav Left-Wing Alliance (the JUL), founded after the SPS (the Socialist Party of Serbia), he claims that "we have nothing against it and we will neither, if I may say so, become angry, nor react in any way, if any of our members join JUL. We would not consider it as our weakness either... I think that the problem of 'double membership' can be easily solved by the leadership agreement.

LOVABLE LAMB: On the occasion of publishing Mihailo Markovic's collected works (just as he was about to be dismissed from the SPS): "You know, philosophical works have never been profitable to anybody, so that we didn't count on profitability when we got involved with this project. We simply thought that one such work needed to be printed, and now we are preparing several booklets for children, and they are soon to be available in the bookshops."

COMMON BLEATING: "We are condemning the extension of war, which wiped out so many lives and caused numerous victims, and from the moment when 'the honourable peace' was offered, further forcing soldiers to fight means nothing but the most brutal crime... Therefore, the principal question which comes to mind today is how long are people supposed to die and suffer only for the mere vanity and greed of their politicians."

PROPHET: "If you called the elections today, SPS would win a convincing majority of seats in parliament, and I am convinced that it will be so in December. If we were not sure of it, we would not prepare the Third Congress in such a manner, and since we are already facing the vision of Serbia in 2000, we believe that, in future, such strategy and program will be put into effect. (While this statement was being dictated, Serbia was struck by the three months demonstrations, the handing over of the local government, and the preparations for the matrimony with the Radical Party).

SUPERFLUOUS ELECTIONS: "Residents of Serbian have chosen to support the peaceful policy and the realisation of their country's economic and political problems, and as for the elections, it is the last thing on their minds."

WELL DONE!: "Without money, there’s no capital."
